When it comes to winter weather, Indiana had been spared so far this season – that is, until a major storm slammed the region last week, causing mayhem on the state’s roads, highways, and interstates. Although most areas only reported three to four inches of snow accumulation, police say that strong winds and blowing snow caused a high number of serious traffic accidents. All in all, one person was killed in a weather-related car accident, while another resident was critically injured.
According to Indiana State Police, the fatal Indiana car accident took place on Thursday afternoon on Highway 33 in Fort Wayne on icy roads. One car slid into an oncoming car in the opposing lane, killing 31-year-old Eric Sitcler of Fort Wayne.
Also on Highway 33, a dump truck traveling in Allen County lost control on wintery roads and clipped a tractor-trailer, which in turn collided with an SUV. The driver of the smaller vehicle was ejected from the vehicle and remains in critical condition at a local hospital. The driver of the dump truck left the scene of the accident. Police believe that snow, wind, and low visibility contributed to the crash.
The season’s first winter storm is a reminder to all of us to slow down and make deliberate movements when driving in snow or, better yet, to stay out of the storm altogether.
