Should Speed Limits Be Lowered on Greene County Roads?

Two families are in mourning after a double-fatality car accident on a country road outside of Lyons in Greene County, Indiana. At the same time, Indiana officials wonder if the similar future car accidents on the county’s two-lane highways could be prevented by lowering the roads’ speed limits.

The deadly Indiana car accident took place on January 3 of this year when a couple and their two children were traveling on County Road 200 South (Old Lyons Road). An oncoming car, driven by a Jasonville woman, left her lane and slammed head-on into the vehicle. Both drivers were killed instantly in the accident while a woman and her two children suffered serious multiple injuries in the crash.

Could the fatalities have been prevented if not for the county’s posted speed limit of 55 miles per hour? District 3 Commissioner Rick Graves believes that a lower speed limit on all county roads will save lives, and plans to start a discussion regarding the meeting at the upcoming commissioners meeting. Greene County Sheriff Terry Pierce agrees that the speed limit should be lowered on most county roads, telling reporters that 55 miles per hour is not a safe speed for the highways, especially considering the increasing traffic on the roads and other factors.
