The first snow of the season caught some Indiana drivers by surprise and raised the rate of car accidents on I-65, I-69 and in the Indianapolis area. Indiana State Police reported a number of one- and two-vehicle accidents as cars slipped and slid on the slick roads.

Snow Causes A Rash Of Accidents Across Indiana

This winter’s first significant snow storm and inclement weather was to blame for an increase in traffic accidents across Indiana this week – with I-65, I-69 and city streets in Indianapolis all seeing a greater than usual number of car accidents. In many cases, light dustings of snow melted onto roadways, causing slick conditions and black ice.

In Clinton County, a number of early-morning car crashes on I-65 left one dead and a number of vehicles damaged. Indiana State Police also reported a large number of one-vehicle accidents in which cars left the roadway after their drivers lost control. In Indianapolis, an estimated 100 weather-related accidents were called in. All of the accidents resulted in closed lanes and traffic delays – one bus accident even took down power lines. In another accident, an elderly woman lost control and her car slid into a pond, killing the woman.

More snow is expected in Indiana soon.
