The Most Dangerous Truck Routes in Lake County & Porter County

Anyone who lives in the Chicago Area or Northwest Indiana knows that the area is one of the busiest places in the country for commercial trucks, semis, 18-wheelers, and big rigs. Now, a new study based on federal transportation crash data shows just how dangerous these heavily traveled truck routes can be both for truckers and for those in passenger vehicles.

Below, examine Illinois and Indiana truck crash data in Lake County, Porter County, and other suburbs affected by the area’s truck routes. All data was collected between 2000 and 2008.
  • Gary recorded almost 1,700 commercial truck accidents in eight years, resulting in 40 fatalities. The most dangerous truck routes in Gary are Interstate 80 and Interstate 94.
  • Hammond saw 1,627 big rig accidents and 26 related fatalities. Interstate 80 and Interstate 94 were the most likely locations for truck accidents.
  • Thornton and Thornton Township dealt with 1,049 truck accidents between 2000 and 2008, along with 30 truck accident fatalities. These accidents were most likely to happen on Interstate 294
  • Valparaiso recorded 391 truck accidents and 13 truck crash deaths, most of which took place on Route 30.
  • Portage saw 363 18-wheeler crashes and 13 truck accident fatalities. The most dangerous truck route was I-80/I-94.
Have you or a family member been harmed in an Indiana truck accident or Illinois big rig crash? It is important to speak with an area personal injury attorney about your crash and whether you may deserve compensation. Call Keller & Keller today.
