Trucker Dies In Freak Toll Booth Accident On Indiana Toll Road

Early on the morning of January 7, Indiana State Police say that a trucker at the Portage toll plaza was killed in a bizarre truck accident while the driver was getting a toll road ticket. According to reports, 47-year-old Jaroslaw Lelis exited his truck to get a toll ticket when his truck rolled backward. Lelis became pinned between his truck door and a concrete poll that protected the tollbooth.

Rescue workers arrived at the scene of the truck accident and transported the injured trucker to Porter Valparaiso Hospital Campus. He died of massive head trauma. The Indiana truck accident occurred on the eastbound side of the Indiana Toll Road in lane 4E of the toll plaza at 2 am in the morning on Thursday.

IN police added that the odd truck accident occurred before the winter storm began in the area later in the day. It is not clear why the truck rolled backward causing the fatal accident.

Not a "freak accident"- he was in the Eastbound lane going through the ticket machines, which commonly don't work due to poor maintenance and design by ITR. He had to climb out of his truck and manually press the button to try to retrieve his ticket. The truck was out of gear when he did so.
