Commute To Work? Prevent Indiana Car Accidents with These Safety Tips

This week we covered the tragic story of a Jeffersonville pedestrian who was struck by a cyclist and then by a driver on the Clark Memorial Bridge. What did the pedestrian, the bike rider, and the driver all have in common? They were all commuting home from work at the time of the collisions.

Below, we’ve collected some useful safety tips for those who commute to work in Indiana by car.
  • Beware highway hypnosis! Also known as driving without attention mode, this phenomenon takes place when you “zone out” while driving. This could happen when you are on a long, empty stretch of highway – or when you are on a familiar route like your commute to work. To avoid highway hypnosis, try using several different routes to work and avoid common driver distractions.
  • Don’t multitask while driving. A late start to work may mean eating breakfast in the car, putting on makeup, or making some work-related calls on your cell phone. However, not making driving your first priority significantly increases your chances of an accident. Put down the phone, the mascara, and your breakfast burrito.
  • Leave office problems at the office. The car on your way to or from work is a common time to think about the stress of your job, work through issues at work, or plan your day. Unfortunately, letting your mind drift from the road is extremely unsafe. Use your commute to relax, listen to music, and give your mind a break. It’s safer and better for your mental health.
  • Realize the traffic is heavier. You most likely commute during rush hours – times when there are high volumes of vehicles on the road. The sheer number of cars on the road doesn’t just slow you down, it also increases the chances of an accident. Beware stop-and-go traffic, construction areas, and tailgating.
