This week, a high-speed crash left two men dead on I-70 in Clay County, Indiana. The young men lost control of their car, went over the Interstate 70 median, and slammed into the broad side of a big rig traveling in the opposite direction. It is one of hundreds of serious car accidents that take place on I-70 in Indiana each year.

Interstate 70 travels east-west through Indiana through 156 miles of farmland and cityscape. It intersects with I-465, I-65 and I-74 in Indianapolis, making it a popular highway for both daily commuting and long-distance trips. Interstate 70 passes through Clay County, Vigo County, Putnam County, Morgan County, Hendricks County, Marion County, Hancock County, Henry County, and Wayne County, as well as the towns and cities of Richmond, Greenfield, Indianapolis, Plainfield, Cloverdale, and Terre Haute.

While I-70 makes it easier for many to travel and go to work, it can also be deadly. Interstate construction projects, tractor-trailers, reckless drivers, fatigued drivers, distracted drivers, and drunk drivers all make this major Indiana artery a danger to even the most careful drivers. Here are a few examples of recent I-70 car accidents, motorcycle collisions, and truck crashes.

· In New Paris, a man was airlifted from an I-70 motorcycle crash on an onramp. The Wayne County resident suffered serious injuries in the Interstate 70 accident.

· A big rig overturned at the I-70 north split, closing the eastbound lanes for hours.

· In Putnam County, an I-70 accident killed a Terre Haute man on Sunday morning. The man slammed into the back of a semi-truck traveling uphill at a reduced speed with its hazard lights on.
