Purdue University Study: Which Indiana Drivers are Most Likely to Suffer Car Accidents & Injuries

Are men or women more likely to suffer serious injury on Indiana roads? And are drivers of different ages and genders more or less likely to experience a car accident depending on the road conditions?

Fred Mannering, the Charles Pankow professor of civil engineering at Purdue University, looked in to both of these questions by analyzing data from Indiana police reports between 2007 and 2008. All in all, he analyzed 23,431 single-car Indiana car accidents that resulted in serious injury.

Here are some of his most interesting findings:
  • Men over the age of 45 were the most likely group to be severely injured in a one-car accident on snow or ice.
  • Men driving in pickup trucks were 81 percent more likely to suffer a serious injury in snowy conditions than those driving other vehicles.
  • Men under the age of 45 were 75 percent more likely to suffer severe injuries on roads free of ice, snow, or water.
  • Women 45 years old and older were significantly more likely to crash and become injured on wet roads than on dry roads.
  • Women of all ages are more likely than men to experience a one-vehicle accident on wet roads.
What are the explanations for these findings? Mannering says that while they can only speculate, his findings suggest that younger male drivers may be more reckless when they believe conditions are safe, while older male drivers could be overly confident of their skills in snow and ice. At the same time, female drivers may be cautious on snow and ice but not recognize the danger posed by rain and wet roads.
