How Drivers Can Help Prevent Indiana Pedestrian Accidents

This month we covered an Indiana traffic accident news story that involved a pedestrian on the Clark Memorial Bridge in Jeffersonville being struck by a passing driver. The man, who regularly commutes to work on foot, is in critical condition and suffering from serious head and abdominal injuries.

While that particular Indiana pedestrian accident is still under investigation by authorities, we thought that this was an appropriate time to discuss how drivers can help prevent pedestrian accidents. Everyone knows to look both ways and use crosswalks (even if we don’t always do so). This week, we will focus on what those behind the wheel can do to keep those on foot safe from injury.
  • Use your peripheral vision. You might think it’s a great idea to concentrate on traffic while behind the wheel. However, while paying attention to the road is extremely important, it is also important to keep an eye peeled for pedestrians on the side of the road. Driving in populated areas is no time for tunnel vision.
  • Remember that children are unpredictable. Adults tend to be slow-moving and predictable on foot. Kids are another story. Especially around school zones and parks, keep an eye out for kids darting after balls, running into the road, or riding bikes without regard for traffic.
  • Beware pedestrians with headphones. A new study recently found that pedestrians wearing headphones were three times more likely to suffer injuries in a traffic accident. Those listening to music or mobile devices might not hear you approaching or may be more focused on what they are hearing than where they are on the sidewalk.
  • Don’t speed – it’s the law. There are many, many good reasons not to speed while driving, and pedestrian accidents are near the top of the list. Speeding is a factor in a significant number of pedestrian deaths each year in Indiana, and going the speed limit is an easy way to prevent these senseless tragedies.
