Interstate 465 (I-465): Indianapolis Beltway Known For Car Accidents

Outside of Indianapolis on May 11, a one-year-old child was rushed to Methodist Hospital, suffering from a car accident brain injury, after the car the baby was riding in flipped over a guardrail on Interstate 465. The driver, the baby's father, is now facing Driving Under the Influence (DUI) charges.

In October, a tractor trailer tipped over on the I-65 onramp leading to I-465, trapping both the driver and his passenger inside the big rig while they waited for help. The accident injured both occupants and closed I-465 for hours while the commercial truck was removed by authorities.

Unfortunately, these are just a few examples of hundreds of
car accidents and truck crashes that take place on I-465 each year. Although the beltway provides easy access to all parts of the city and allows cross-country travelers to bypass the downtown area, its proximity to Indiana's capital makes the road heavily traveled and its roughly rectangular shape means that the 57-mile loop is fraught with dangerous curves.

Interstate 465 is also crisscrossed with a number of other main interstates and highways in Indiana, including I-70, I-74, I-65, I-865, and I-69. The road passes through Marion County, Boone County, and Hamilton County as well as Indianapolis, Speedway, Lawrence, and Beach Grove. Each day, I-465 sees over 200,000 cars that commute regularly to different parts of Indianapolis or to the city's suburbs.

Currently, an $800 million
construction project is underway to refurbish the entire western side of the beltway - a move that should improve commutes and reduce the number of car accidents.
