Compiled by the state of Indiana, IUPUI’s Center for Criminal Justice Research, the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, the list of the city’s most dangerous intersections includes many that local drivers agree are not safe. Three of the top eight most dangerous intersections have appeared on the same list in past years, causing many to wonder why Marion County hasn’t taken the information from the study and made changes to roads that see dozens of serious accidents in any given year. Others, on the other hand, believe that the list of dangerous intersections should be a wake up call to drivers who don’t pay attention, speed, and drive recklessly.
Two intersections that have made the list in past years, the intersection of Raymond Street and Shelby Street and the intersection of 38th Street and Lafayette Road, are no longer considered highly dangerous.
1) 86th Street and Keystone Avenue had 34 accidents and 18 injuries. 2) 25th Street and Post Road had 28 accidents and 13 injuries. 3) 86th Street and Allisonville Road had 24 collisions. 4) Emerson Avenue and Southport Road had 22 collisions and 4 injuries. 5) 38th Street and Shadeland Avenue had 21 collisions, 12 injuries and one fatality. 6) 30th Street and Shadeland Avenue had 21 accidents and 13 injuries. 7) East Street and Thompson Road had 21 accidents and 6 injuries. 8) 16th Street and Meridian Street had 21 accidents and 5 injuries.
The Indiana Department of Transportation stated that the study helps their organization pinpoint trouble areas and investigate how certain intersection can be made safer. Not all solutions have to involve costly re-design, either – in some cases, the information is used by Indiana Police who make a point to patrol dangerous areas more often to curb traffic violations.
