Preventing Car And Bicycle Accidents In Indiana

This week, we covered the tragic story of Greenfield Police Officer Williams, who was killed in a hit-and-run accident in Central Indiana while riding his bicycle with two other off-duty cops. Authorities are still looking for the driver that caused the fatal cycling accident.

This deadly bike accident can help educate others about sharing the road with cyclists in Indiana. The rate of these bike accident injuries and bike injury deaths can drop significantly if both drivers and cyclists worked toward safer roads.

What cyclists can do to prevent bike accidents…

As a cyclist, the most important step you can take toward preventing injury is wearing a helmet and properly maintaining your bike. If biking at night, be sure to use headlights, flashing lights on your back, and reflective clothing. All responsible cyclists should follow the rules of the road, obey all traffic signs and lights, and not take special privileges just because they are on a bike.

What drivers can do to prevent bike accidents…

First and foremost, drivers can simply be more aware that cyclists are on the road. Cyclists are already more difficult to see, especially when passing and turning. Secondly drivers should be careful about distracted driving. Using your mobile phone, tending to children in the back seat, or other distractions can distract you from the road and often make you veer to the side of the road where cyclists ride.

When it comes to drivers and bikers, there is often a lot of blame regarding “who’s fault” an accident is. In reality, both bike riders and drivers can do more to prevent these accidents in Indiana.
