Because of road construction, teen drivers, and heavy traffic, the rate of car accidents in Indiana rises during the summer months.

Summer Months Mean A Rise In Car Accidents Across Indiana

There’s a lot to look forward to during the summer months, including having the kids at home, enjoying the weather, getting outside, and taking that family vacation. But it is also important to remember that summer is also the time of year when the most car accidents take place in Indiana, especially for teen drivers. In fact, the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day are the most dangerous days of the year for those on the road.

Why is summer such a dangerous time on Indiana’s streets, highways, and interstates?

• Teen drivers aren’t in school. When kids have the summer off, they are more likely to be on the road and they are more likely to be staying out late or even drinking on the weekends and during the week. College kids, too, aren’t studying on campus as they are during the academic year – they are more often on the road and out with friends. With less to do and less experience behind the wheel than most adults, teens become involved in accidents involving speeding, driver error, reckless driving, and drunk driving.
• More cars are on the road. More vehicles out on the streets means more traffic and more accidents. During the summer, many families hit the road on vacations and car trips, while hundreds of thousands of seniors load up RVs and trailers for cross-country adventures. This traffic can cause tailgating, rear-end accidents, and other collisions, especially because many Americans find themselves driving on unfamiliar roads.
• More pedestrians and cyclists are out and about. Just as there are more cars on the roads, there are also more motorcycles, bicycles, and people on foot. With warmer weather and plenty of summer activities, the shoulders and sidewalks of our streets soon fill with those using alternative modes of transportation. Distracted drivers and drivers who aren’t familiar with bicycle and pedestrian laws may find themselves in an accident before fall arrives.
• It’s the season for road construction. Road work is often completed in the warmer months – and road construction zones unfortunately often lead to traffic accidents. Many of these accidents can be avoided if drivers slow down, pay attention to road work signage, and don’t follow the vehicle in front of them too closely.
