This week we covered the tragic story of a deadly truck accident in Orange County on Indiana 37. Perhaps the most tragic part of the truck accident, in which thee people in two different cars were killed and another was serious injured, is that the accident was completely preventable. An accident investigation revealed that the fatal Indiana accident was caused by an improperly tied truck load. A 44,000 pound steel coil rolled off the truck because the load was not sufficiently tied to the truck with chains by the driver.
Unfortunately, improperly restrained truck loads are a common cause of car and truck accidents in Indiana. In many cases, the trucker or truck company was not in compliance with federal trucking regulations when they improperly loaded their truck or tied down their load. While overloading or improperly loading truck can often boost truck company profits and save time, they also often lead to tragic accidents in which truck cargo falls onto the highway or interstate, causing deadly and dangerous hazards. In other cases, a truck driver or dock worker may simply have lacked the proper training to load a truck properly. In either case, the trucking company may be negligent and may be responsible for your truck accident injury and other damages.
Even a small piece of debris falling from a truck can be extremely dangerous to other vehicles, considering the speed and impact of the debris on an interstate. Improperly loaded trucks can also lead to rollover accidents as the contents of the truck’s trailer shift or fall during transportation.
