VIOXX

VIOXX
VIOXX (rofecoxib), a popular anti-inflammatory drug manufactured by Merck &Co. Inc., is used for the treatment of arthritis and pain, most commonly for the treatment of acute and chronic osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, relief of pain in adults and treatment of menstrual discomfort. Vioxx has been distributed to over 20 million American citizens and 105 million prescriptions have been written world-wide.
On September 30th, 2004, Merck recalled Vioxx from the market after studies showed an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other cardiovascular events in patients who had taken it, especially for longer than 18 months.

Injury
One of the initial reasons for the popularity of Vioxx is the manufacturer had claimed minor side effects as compared to other pain medications. Even though side effects had been considered to be minor by the manufacturer, Vioxx is now being blamed for causing blood clots, hearts attacks, and strokes. Additionally, use is cautioned under many circumstances including for people hyper-sensitive Vioxx component ingredients and those with severe allergies to aspirin and other NSAIDs.

Commonly, arthritis-related pain and other similar aches have often been treated with NSAIDs. The reasons for the popularity is the effectiveness of this particular family of pharmaceutical. However, the effectiveness is balanced with some risk. Annually, over 10,000 deaths result from the use of NSAIDs in the United States. This is thought to be approximately one-tenth of the number of injuries requiring hospitalization. Of this number, gastrointestinal injuries are often the most severe. These injuries are caused by because NSAIDs block enzyme production which encourages gastrointestinal side effects such as ulcers. However, as noted above, other potential injuries include blood clots, hearts attacks, and strokes.
