What Should You Do Immediately After A Car Accident? A Car Accident Checklist.

If you've ever asked yourself what to do after a traffic accident, here are 7 steps to take immediately following your car accident. Following our car accident checklist will strengthen your case if you need to file a claim with your insurance company.

1. Get yourself treated for injuries immediately. Your health is your number one priority. Don't shake off people trying to help you, and don't assume that you are okay. You may be in shock from the crash and you may not know what is best for you. Many injuries such as
concussions or whiplash may not be apparent at first, and the after-effects may not present themselves until days later.

2.
Make sure there is a police report - and make sure not to leave the scene until the police have left. Get the names of the specific police officers handling your case.

3.
Exchange information with the other drivers involved in the crash, including contact information and insurance information.

4.
Don't talk to anyone about the accident with the exception of the police. Never apologize for the accident or say that it was your fault. Realize that you may be shaken up by the accident and may not be fully aware of what has happened.

5. Take pictures of the scene and any damage. Don't have a camera?
You should keep a disposable one in your glove compartment along with your insurance information.

6. Talk to any witnesses and make sure you get their contact information as well. They could have vital information for your case.

7. When you get home,
review your insurance policy (which you should already be somewhat familiar with) and call your insurance company to report your claim. Make sure you write down your claim number and ask any questions you have in regards to your policy.

As always,
contact an experienced car accident lawyer if you have questions, or if you believe your claim was unfairly denied. You may only be in one or two car accidents in your lifetime, but Keller & Keller investigates car accident claims and speaks to insurance companies every day, and we can help.
