1 killed, 1 jailed in hit-and-run crash

A Fort Wayne man is behind bars, suspected of being the driver in a hit-and-run fatal crash early Sunday morning, March 1, 2009
A Ford Explorer driven by Matthew Burns, 27, of the 1000 block of Oak Valley Road, was heading south on Lima Road near Broadmoor Avenue when it collided with a pickup truck, also heading south.
A man inside the truck was ejected from his seat. Medics transported the man, age 43, to a hospital in critical condition. He later died there. His identity has not been released by the Allen County Coroner’s Office.
A 42-year-old woman inside the truck, whom police have not identified, was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
Moments after the collision, police said Burns fled. An Allen County police officer on the scene spotted Burns’ sport utility vehicle just north of the crash scene, at Lima and Wallen roads where he was arrested.
Burns faces charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death and leaving the scene of a crash. He was being held without bail.
The crash is under investigation by members of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Crash Team.
