2 Hagerman men killed in crash

Posted on May 07, 2009

An accident that occurred near Hagerman on Tuesday, May 5, 2009, left two residents dead after one of the vehicles failed to obey a stop sign and was hit by another vehicle.

The accident occurred at the intersection of East Ottawa and Vineyard roads, just west of Hagerman. It involved a 2007 Toyota pickup, driven by Nathan Turpen, 23, and a 1983 Chevy pickup, driven by Fred Layton, 74.

The initial investigation of the crash scene revealed that Turpen was traveling south on Vineyard and that Layton was traveling west on Ottawa. Police said evidence at the scene indicated that Turpen ran the stop sign and was broadsided by Layton.

Both vehicles slid to the southwest corner of the intersection, and the Chevy pickup rolled onto its right side, ejecting Layton from the vehicle.

Turpen was pronounced dead at the scene by a deputy medical investigator. Layton was transported by ambulance to Eastern New Mexico Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Alcohol was not considered to be a factor in the crash and it was determined that seat belts were not used by either driver.
