30 Students Injured In Indiana Bus Collision In McCordsville

Posted on May 30, 2011

Thirty students received minor injuries this week when one school bus rear-ended another school bus in Hancock County. The superintendent of the Mount Vernon school district said that 100 to 120 children were on the buses at the time of the vehicle accident, which took place just after three in the afternoon after school let out.

While some students had visible injuries, such as a bloody nose, other students who reported pain after the crash were taken to three area hospitals simply for checkups and health screenings. The parents of many of the uninjured children walked or drove to the scene of the bus accident from their nearby homes and tended to their children.

The bus accident occurred at the intersection of Hancock County Road 600 North and Rockingham Lane, when one school bus slowed down to turn into the Stansbury housing subdivision. The second bus, traveling behind the first, failed to slow down. One of the buses left the road and came to rest in a ditch.

Both bus drivers submitted blood tests to check for drug or alcohol use, but investigators say that both drivers passed field sobriety tests. Still, the drivers will not return to their routes until the blood tests are processed.
