Winter weather conditions caused multiple fatalities and pile-ups along I-69 in Indiana on Tuesday, February 3. Police warmed all drivers to leave plenty of following room between cars, take their time, and stay off the roads altogether if possible.
According to the Indianapolis Star, a 32-vehicle crash, which involved eight tractor-trailers and a variety of other cars and trucks, shut down all lanes of Interstate 69 and killed two. A third person in critical condition was rushed to Methodist Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The man's small Honda slid under a truck's trailor, trapping him inside. The two fatalities were Dustin R. Goettman, 27, and Ryan A. Phillips, 28, both of Anderson - both were traveling in the same car, which appeared to have been hit by two big rig trucks during the pile-up.
Indiana State Police told reporters that the accident took place in Hamilton County at around 9 am, just as weather conditions were deteriorating. The accident was in sight of Fishers High School, just north of I-465.
Eye witness Jamie Earl of Indianapolis told reporters that the road became slick very quickly, causing a car slide off the road. When a fire truck and semi pulled over to help the vehicle, more cars and trucks began to slide into one another. Earl saw a truck jackknife, taking out several other vehicles, before his own car was hit behind by another truck. His car flew 20 feet into a ditch, though Earl was uninjured.
The KY Post reported that 11 other people were injured in the crash. Two other smaller pile-ups also took place on the interstate during the sudden and heavy snowstorm. One, involving 18 vehicles, took place near Indiana 38, while another, involving 11 vehicles, took place near Indiana 13.
Traffic was stalled for over ten hours while emergency crews cleared the wrecks.
