3-bike crash kills one Motorcyclist

Posted on Apr 28, 2009

James L. Edmundson Jr., 43, of Kokomo is dead after an April 26, 2009, motorcycle accident in Miami County, and two other motorcyclists are hospitalized.

Troopers reported all three motorcyclists had been traveling at a high rate of speed prior to the accident on U.S. 31, just south of Ind. 18.

Edmundson was pronounced dead at the scene of massive head trauma; Aaron T. Robertson, 30, Kokomo, and Emory G. Smiley Jr., Kokomo, were both airlifted with head injuries and lacerations, police said.

Trooper Josh Rozzi of the Peru ISP Post said the three riders were traveling southbound on U.S. 31 around 10 p.m. with two other motorcyclists when the three pulled away from the other two at a high rate of speed.

"Early indications are one motorcyclist was attempting to catch up with the other two when it hit the rear of one motorcycle, causing it to crash into the third motorcycle," ISP Sgt. Tony Slocum said in a press statement.

"None of the three involved in this crash were wearing a helmet," Rozzi said. "It’s unfortunate a person has lost their life, but with the high speeds they were traveling it could easily have been three."

Robertson was listed in fair condition Monday at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne, and Smiley Jr. was listed in stable condition at Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis.
