A Clawson bicyclist is in intensive car after being struck by a drunk driver

Posted on Oct 21, 2008

An apparent drunken driving incident on October 15th 2008 has prompted an investigation into a personal injury accident that has left a 53-year-old Clawson man in intensive care.

Police responded to a call near the 900 block of North Main Street where they found an injured bicyclist laying on the ground. Police later determined that a nearby female motorist from Troy was in a drunken state and responsible for striking the bicyclist with her car

The collision left the 53-year-old with severe internal injuries that required immediate medical attention.  The unidentified man was transported by ambulance to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak.  Officials have said that the man is in "stable but guarded condition" as they continue to monitor his severe head trauma.

Weather conditions may also have played a role in this accident, as conditions were dark and rainy (the accident occurred at approximately 10:09 p.m.).  Another contributing factor may have been the major reconstruction that is currently underway on Main Street

Authorities stated that the bicyclist was traveling in the middle of the northbound lane on Main Street when the female motorist, driving a Ford Escape, was exiting a parking space of the Black Lotus Brewery on Main Street. Investigators stated that the woman claimed she did not see the bicyclist.

A preliminary Brethalyzer test registered .17, which is more than twice the legal limit for drunk driving.  After tests, the woman was arrested for intoxicated driving and taken to the Troy Police Dept.

Upon arrival at the police station, the woman refused to take any additional testing for purposes of identifying alcohol consumption. A warrant was obtained by police who then performed a blood test and sent the sample for further processing.

At this time the investigation remains ongoing.
