Accident kills one, injures three on US 2

Joseph Esmer, 54, was a passenger in a car driven by Louis Giesken, 64, Chesaning, Mich., traveling west on US 2 on Sunday, January 18, 2009, in Mackana County's Moran Township. Esmer was fatally injured when an eastbound vehicle driven by 19-year-old Caitlyn Grubb, White Lake, Mich., crossed the centerline and struck the Giesken vehicle. Another eastbound vehicle driven by Kristy Burt, 29, Marquette, then also hit the Giesken vehicle.
Esmer was pronounced dead at the scene. Occupants and drivers of all three vehicles were initially transported by Allied EMS, Mackinaw City EMS and Hendricks Township Fire and EMS to Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace. Grubb, Kristy Burt and three-year-old Parker Burt were treated at St. Ignace. Transferred to Northern Michigan Regional Hospital in Petoskey were Giesken, 54-year-old John Schneider of St. Charles and Joshua Burt, 34, Marquette.
