A new study has found that a significant number of new doctors in Illinois are leaving the state to practice in nearby Midwestern states. Some believe this is because of Illinois' medical malpractice policies, but others disagree.

Are State Med Mal Laws Causing Doctors To Leave Illinois?

Posted on Nov 29, 2010

A new study conducted by the Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine claims that more medical students are leaving Illinois to practice medicine elsewhere because of the state’s stance on medical malpractice and medical liability. However, some critics of the study say that politicians are reading the study incorrectly and coming to the conclusions that they’d like to hear.

In the study, which was conducted this year, researchers asked 561 graduating medical students where they will be practicing medicine in the coming year and how they came to their decision. The students who were leaving Illinois to take up their practice – for places like Indiana or Missouri – said that they were leaving because of job opportunities, higher salaries, or to be near family. However, 70 percent of these students said that Illinois’ high insurance premiums for doctors and their lack of medical malpractice caps also played a role in their decision to leave the state. Currently, about half of Illinois’ medical students leave the state to practice medicine after they graduate from school.

Critics of the study note that it was paid for by the Illinois Hospital Association and the Illinois State Medical Society, two entities that are against the court’s decision to stop med mal caps. Others note that this is a continuing trend and that all states are having increasing trouble recruiting doctors to rural areas. The study also doesn’t take into account that many of Illinois’ doctors come in from out of state to study medicine and then return home.
