Los Lunas, New Mexico – A recent accident in Los Lunas illustrated the danger of ATV crashes for child riders.
The Valencia County Sheriff’s Department reports that collision between an ATV and a truck on October 5 left two boys, 6 and 13, in critical condition.
Neither boy was wearing a helmet when the ATV they were riding on collided with the truck near the corner of San Jose Place and San Marcos, east of Los Lunas around 6 p.m. Both boys suffered broken legs in the accident, in which police say they were traveling too fast.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 88 ATV-related deaths were reported in New Mexico between 1982 and 2008. But the statistics indicate that a disproportionate number of those killed were children. In all, 30 children under the age of 16 were killed in New Mexico ATV crashes between 1982 and 2005.
Deputies investigating the most recent ATV crash believe that the two underage victims are likely at fault, since ATVs are not licensed to operate on New Mexico roadways.
