Could your diabetes drug be helping your health in one way and harming it in another? Recent reports that the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has discovered that Avandia may be linked with heart attacks and heart failure has many wondering whether the drug is defective and should be recalled.
Avandia, also known as rosiglitazone, is taken by millions of people in the United States and its manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, makes billions of dollars a year from selling the product. However, a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that the diabetes drug can help control blood sugar – but also increases the risk of a heart attack by a staggering 47 percent. More recently, the New York Times released information obtained from the FDA showing that the drug probably causes 500 heart attacks and 300 cases of heart failure every month.
The study also found that a similar Type 2 diabetes drug, Actos, has the same effects as Avandia without the dangerous heart-damaging side effects. Some say that GalxoSmithKline knew about the risks of the drugs for years before the study was ordered.
The FDA is planning to review the studies mentioned above as well as a company-funded study that shows that the drug is safe. An advisory board meeting is scheduled for July.
For now, the FDA is recommending that users of Avandia do not stop taking the prescription drug, but if you have concerns about your medication, schedule an appointment with your doctor.
