Baby Killed, Four Injured, In Frankfort On I-65

Posted on May 07, 2009

The Indianapolis Star reports that a Sunday evening car crash on Interstate 65 left a five-month-old baby dead, two mothers injured, and two children injured. The crash took place in Frankfort, IN, which is 40 miles northwest of Indianapolis.

According to Indiana State Police Trooper Michael Krueger, the accident took place when a woman drove over the I-65 median and struck an oncoming car. Twenty-year-old Candice Cunningham of Indianapolis drove her Dodge into oncoming traffic for unknown reasons, hitting 27-year-old Breanne Kemp's Jaguar. Kemp, who is also from Indianapolis, had her two children in the car, Abigale, 6, and Zoe, 8. Cunningham was driving with her infant in the car, Rhilee Courtney.

Cunningham and her daughter were both airlifted from the accident with severe head injuries - the mother was taken to Methodist Hospital while the daughter was taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Rhilee died from her car accident injuries while at the hospital. All three members of the Kemp family were transported to Clarian Arnett Hospital in Lafayette with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Cunningham remains in critical condition with a traumatic brain injury.

Indiana Police told reporters that everyone involved in the crash was wearing a seatbelt and that they baby was properly situated in a car seat. All five car accident victims were responsive after the car accident.

The crash closed I-65 for over an hour as emergency crews clean up debris and collected evidence. The fatal car crash is still under investigation - it is still unknown why Cunningham's car left its lane and cross the median.
