A Greene County teen is in critical condition after an all-terrain vehicle accident last week.
According to the Greene County Daily World, 17-year-old Jared Rifner of Bloomfield was riding on a County Road near Newberry on his ATV when a dog ran out in front of his vehicle, causing the young man to crash and flip. He was found by a second ATV rider who came up behind him in the wake of the accident. The boy, who had a drivers license, was rushed to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he remains in a medically induced coma and suffering from a traumatic brain injury. The dog involved in the accident suffered a broken back and was euthanized by a local vet.
The ATV accident is still under investigation, though police believe that speeding was not a factor in the crash. Police also took the opportunity to warn children and parents of the dangers of four-wheelers, especially when they are ridden by young people on paved roads and especially before teens earned their drivers licenses. The vehicles are designed for off-road use. The officer added that all ATV riders are safer when they wear approved helmets.
Just two months ago, a toddler was injured in Greene County after his stepfather rolled his ATV.
