Brown County Indiana teen airlifted to hospital after two-car crash on SR 46

Posted on Oct 30, 2008

The Brown County Democrat reports that a two-car near-head-on collision on State Road 46 East caused an hour of stopped traffic on Wednesday in front of the North Salem United Methodist Church in Nashville, Indiana. The Sheriff's Department reported that a number of good Samaritans assisted at the scene of the crash until police and medical professionals arrived at the scene.

At 4 PM, eighteen-year-old LeeAnn Hoy of Columbus, Indiana was in the left lane of SR 46E going down hill from Bartholomew County into Brown County. She allegedly passed several vehicles. Both evidence and eyewitness reports indicate that she was speeding to the point that she was breaking the law. Police think that Hoy lost control going around a curve in her Doge Durango SUV. In the righthand lane, 64-old Charles Crase and his wife, 63-year-old Audrey Crase, both also from Columbus, tried to veer and break to avoid the crash in their smaller passenger car. Although his evasive actions avoided a larger and worse accident, the two cars crashed and the SUV continued on to hit a guardrail on the other side of the road.

Hoy was airlifted by Lifeline Medical helicopter to the Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she is being treated for serious injuries. Although she was wearing a seat belt and although her airbag deployed, she suffered severe injuries to her head and abdomen.

Charles Crase and his wife suffered minor injuries in the crash, mostly to their legs. However, safety equipment such as seat belts and air bags prevented worse injuries.

Sergeant Mike Moore is continuing to investigate the accident. Others who helped at the scene were Chief Deputy Mike Adams, Deputy Beni Clevenger, Animal Control Officer Tony West, State Trooper Chris Griggs, two ambulances from Columbus Regional Hospital and Brown County (Nashville) Volunteer Fire Department.
