Brown County Teen Dies In Dirt Bike Accident

Posted on Apr 01, 2009

A dirt bike and ATV collision left one Indianapolis-area teen dead on March 23 according to WTHR Channel 13 Eyewitness News.

A day of racing dirt bikes with friends turned tragic on Saturday as 16-year-old Thomas Hayden crashed on a gravel road near his home in Nashville, Indiana. His vehicle collided with the ATV driven by a friend, 14-year-old John Kegley.

Although both boys were wearing protective helmets, Hayden's helmet fell off during the accident due to the force of the impact. He died of his injuries a day after the crash occured. Kegley was rushed to Riley Hospital, where he has undergone surgery and remains in serious condition.

WCSI reports that the crash was head-on and that neither boy saw the other approaching because they were cresting opposite sides of a steep hill at the time of the dirt bike accident. In the wake of the crash, both boys were airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Hayden's mother, Eva Fleener, explained that Thomas was an experienced dirt bike racer and that his biggest passion was his off-road motorcycle. However, she warned other parents and children that off-road vehicles can be dangerous and that even adventurous riders should be careful and respect the machines they ride. Hayden was described by friends and family as loving life and loving the outdoors.

"It's tough," Fleener said. "There's nothing that can ease the pain of losing a child, especially a child so young."
