Car hit by train, kills teen

Saturday, November 15, 2008, Austin Sams, 18, was driving his Dodge Spirit east on Wabash Road just after 3 p.m. Saturday when he turned north onto County Road 700 West and tried to cross a set of railroad tracks. His car was hit on the passenger side by a Norfolk Southern train carrying 48 cars in Wabash County.

The car burst into flames and was engulfed by the time rescue crews arrived, troopers said. Noble Township firefighters extinguished the blaze and found Sams’ body inside the car.

John Barrett, 32, the engineer of the train was not injured. The train traveled 1 1/2 miles before it managed to stop. The railroad crossing was equipped with properly operating flashing lights and signs but did not have stop crossing arms. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
