Car Strikes Infant in Stroller on Crosswalk

A Frankfort infant was hospitalized for evaluation Wednesday afternoon, October 29, 2008, after a car struck his stroller, causing him to fall out.

The infant, Guiloermo Mariano, 552 S. Columbia St. Apt. 2, was in a stroller being pushed by his mother, Eloisa Navarrete. The mother and son entered a crosswalk at the intersection of State Road 28 West and Columbia Street at which point a 2002 Mercury Sable, driven by Tina M. Sholly, 46, 2717 E. Kelley Road, turning left onto State Road 28 hit the stroller.

Mariano was taken by EMS to St. Vincent Frankfort Hospital for a possible injury to his face.

Two witnesses at the scene told Shoemaker the pedestrians had the walk sign at the intersection at the time the crash occurred.

Sholly was cited for an infraction in relation to the Indiana traffic code about "walk" and "don't walk" signals.

Navarrete stated she began walking across the road thinking Sholly would stop, but the driver instead entered the intersection without even looking.
