Carlsbad man dies in two-car collision

Posted on Mar 05, 2009

CARLSBAD — Andy Gutierrez, 49, was transported to Carlsbad Medical Center from the accident scene near the intersection of State Road 200 and Illinois Camp Road (County Road 206) and was subsequently pronounced dead after a collision involving a 1994 Chevrolet pickup driven by Belia Gutierrez, 49, of Carlsbad, and a 2002 Mack tractor trailer driven by 48-year-old Ruben Cordero of Artesia on Wednesday night, March 4, 2009. Andy Gutierrez was identified as a passenger in the pickup.

An on-scene investigation revealed that the pickup was traveling northbound on Illinois Camp Road approaching the intersection of State Road 200 when it failed to come to a complete stop at the intersection and proceeded into the roadway, where it was struck broadside by the tractor trailer. The impact of the crash forced both vehicles onto the dirt shoulder on the west side of the roadway.

Cordero was checked by emergency medical personnel at the scene and released with minor injuries. Belia Gutierrez was transported to Carlsbad Medical Center for treatment.

Failure to yield and alcohol use are being investigated as major contributing factors in the crash. Seat belts were in use by all occupants except Andy Gutierrez.
