Chicago Heights Teen Severely Bitten By Dog

Posted on Dec 26, 2009

You’ve heard about a hit-and-run, but what about a bite-and-run? This is what happened to 15-year-old Girthamarie Gary of Chicago Heights, who was attacked by a pit bull on her way to the public library at the corner of Lincoln Highway and Edgewood Avenue. Gary said that after a woman’s dog bit her leg and hand, the dog owner ran away, leaving the young teen bleeding heavily on the sidewalk.

After the Chicago dog bite incident, Gary spent four days in the hospital and her maimed hand required surgery, antibiotics, and ongoing care. She was first taken to St. James Hospital and then transferred to Munster Hospital. Finally, she had hand surgery at the University of Chicago hospital before finally being released. She has lost feeling in two of her fingers, suffers from pain, and can’t play volleyball with her friends. She now has a metal pin in her finger which will help the mostly-severed digit to heal as well as it can.

Police say that 37-year-old Catina Jones, who owns a pit bull named Star, was cited for not having a city license for her dog. Jones insists that she was not the woman involved in the dog bite incident and that she never walks her dog on Lincoln Highway. Meanwhile, Gary’s mother has called a dog bite lawyer and plans on suing for the medical costs of the dog attack.
