Heavy fog may be to blame in the industrial plant death of a worker who was hit in the head by a forklift. Officials are investigating the case further, but believe that the fatal head injury was an accident.

Chicago Man Killed In Forklift Accident – May Be Fog Related

Posted on Dec 24, 2009

A Resource Management worker was killed in the Chicago area by a forklift, and investigators think that heavy fog in the area may have played a major role in the deadly Illinois industrial accident. While accidents in industrial jobs is more common than in most other sectors, poor weather conditions can make a dangerous job even more dangerous, especially at night.

Chicago Ridge Police Chief Tim Baldermann told reporters that 26-year-old Jesus Hernandez-Blas was working in Chicago Ridge around Midnight on Monday when a coworker hit the man on the head with a forklift in poor weather conditions. The Cook County medical examiner's office said that the man was pronounced dead at the scene of the industrial accident and that an autopsy revealed that he died of major head trauma.

While accident investigators believe that fog may have been a cause, and while the forklift operator has been fully cooperating with authorities, officials are still wondering why Hernandez-Blas was not seen earlier by the man operating the forklift. The forlift driver passed a blood alcohol content test after the Illinois accident. The two men were working for a recycling company at the time of the Chicago accident. Chicago Ridge is a southwest suburb of Chicago.

It is not clear whether the man was in a hardhat area at the time of the industrial plant accident or whether he was wearing head protection when the forklift hit him.
