Clark Memorial Bridge Accident Critically Injures Pedestrian

Posted on Feb 21, 2012

A commuting cyclist struck a commuting pedestrian on the Indiana side of the Clark Memorial Bridge last week, causing the pedestrian to fall into the road where he was struck by a passing car.

According to the Courier-Journal, 38-year-old Michael Amick was commuting on foot from Jeffersonville to Louisville on Thursday, January 26, when he was struck by an unidentified cyclist traveling in the opposite direction. Amick fell onto the bridge’s roadway, where he was struck by a 33-year-old Indiana driver. He was rushed to University Hospital in critical condition, where he was treated for a head injury and internal injuries.

As police investigate the accident, a number of factors and causes have come into light. The cyclist was riding on the sidewalk when he should have been riding with motorized traffic. In addition, the conditions were wet and the accident took place at dusk, making for low visibility and slick roads. Finally, the bridge has been the site of multiple cyclist accidents in the past, and many bikers complain that the narrow bridge is extremely dangerous for cyclists.

Police do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the Indiana pedestrian accident, but the cyclist and the driver of the car were tested for substances.

The Indiana car accident attorneys at Keller & Keller LLP wish Michael Amick a swift and complete recovery.
