Construction Worker Killed At Site Of New Medical Officers In Illinois

Posted on Feb 23, 2011

According to the Chicago Tribune, an Indiana man was killed while working on a construction site outside of Chicago, Illinois, last week. Now, the family of the man plans to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the steel manufacturer and the construction company.

The fatal Illinois construction site accident took place in Glenview, a town just outside of Chicago and the future site of a new $100 million medical office building located near Glenbrook Hospital. The construction site accident occurred on February 9.

The Glenview Fire Chief told reporters that 43-year-old Kenneth Puplava, of Portage, Indiana was killed while on-the-job at the site of the new medical building, which will be an extension of the hospital. The construction worker death took place when the man was struck with a beam. It is unclear whether or not he was wearing a hard hat at the time of the accident. Reports that the man had become trapped under the beam are erroneous.

Puplava was rushed to the nearby Glenbrook Hospital, but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The cause of his death will be examined by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office, but after an initial investigation, it seems that the construction death will be ruled an accident.

The family of the Indiana man have filed two wrongful death lawsuits in response to the construction accident. One lawsuit claims that the steel company that manufactured the beams used defective welds that caused the beam collapse. The other lawsuit claims that Pepper Construction Company had its workers building in unsafe conditions.
