Construction Worker Killed In Fall At Indianapolis Convention Center

Posted on Jun 25, 2009

A construction worker was killed in a fatal fall at the Convention Center construction site in Indianapolis, Indiana last week. This is the fifth crane death construction accident in as many years. According to Indiana state officials, 55-year-old Stanley Roberts was working on steel girders about 50 feet off of the ground when the lift (also known as a cherry picker) tipped. He lost his balance and fell. Roberts had extensive experience using the elevated lifts.

While safety authorities have concluded that Roberts fall took place because the construction worker did not attach his safety harness to the equipment he was working on, his wife, Kathy Roberts, insists that her husband always took the correct construction site safety precautions while on the job. She believes that the harness malfunctioned, causing her husband's fall accident.

"All indications point that the harness was not connected to the elevated lift, but that's one of the major things that we're going to be looking at," said IOSHA spokesman Sean Keefer of the construction accident.

Work on the new Indianapolis Convention Center was halted until Monday as investigators examined the constriction site and interviewed workers. The investigation may take months while officials put together the puzzle of why safety-conscious Roberts would not have been properly connected to his equipment.

Shiel Sexton, the contractor on the IN construction job, said that their company policy requires safety lines for anyone working more than six feet off of the ground. According to the Center for Construction Research and Training, about 26 construction workers die each year while using elevated lifts.
