For sports fanatics and casual fans alike, the Super Bowl is a time for friends, great snacks, and the biggest football event in the world. However, although it is the most-watched sporting event of the year, it is also one of the deadliest days to be on the road.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Super Bowl Sunday in 2007 saw a shocking 33% of fatal crashes involve driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Nationwide in 2007, 48 % of crashes involved drunk drivers.
To try to curb these frightening numbers and save lives, the Indiana Governor's Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving are campaigning for Super Bowl watchers to watch what they consume and designate a driver on game day.
"No matter which team you're rooting for in Super Bowl XLIII, if you choose to drink, make a play for safety by giving your keys to a sober driver. By working together, we can reduce the number of alcohol-related crashes and fatalities on Indiana roadways this year," said ICJI Executive Director, T. Neil Moore. "Designating a sober driver should be on the top of everyone's Super Bowl party list."
The council also reminded everyone that you may be liable if someone leaves your Super Bowl party drunk and causes an accident on their way home. They also reminded Indianans that they can always call a cab, stay the night at the host's house, call someone to pick you up, or get a ride with a responsible and sober friend. In addition, the council recommended that those who spot drunk drivers on the road on Super Bowl Sunday should report the incident to the police. Finally - always buckle your seat belt, no matter whether there is a big game or not.
