Dog Pack Kills 7-Year-Old Boy In Central Illinois

Posted on Sep 22, 2010

A 7-year-old Marshall County boy was mauled to death by a pack of dogs while visiting a friend outside of La Salle, Indiana.

Marshall County Sheriff Rob Russell told reporters that the boy, Northwest School second grader Jason Walter, went to the home of a family friend, Eric Shanklin, when he was attacked by a pack of four dogs. The dogs, three of which were pit bulls owned by a trailer resident on the property, and one of which was a mixed-breed shepherd, confronted the boy in the driveway.

The family called 911 and they boy was transferred to a local fire station where he died while waiting for an emergency medical helicopter to arrive. The four dogs were transported to a local veterinarian where they were euthanized. Their bodies will be tested for rabies.

Sheriff Russell said that it was unclear which of the four dogs actively participated in the fatal Illinois dog attack – or how the incident occurred. He stressed that the dog bite case was still under investigation.

While some neighbors said they had never had a problem with the dogs on the property, others said that they had seen the pit bulls acting aggressively in the past. Shanklin, who owned the mixed-breed dog, agreed that the pit bull had displayed aggressive behavior before.

No charges have been pressed so far in this Marshall County dog attack case.
