INDIANAPOLIS -- Thomas Wimberly, an Indianapolis man, suffered severe dog bites after he stepped in to try and stop three pit bulls from mauling Carolyn Bales on Monday evening, November 3rd, 2008, police said.
Bales took a shortcut through a yard and was attacked by three pit bulls in an alley in the 2800 block of Brookside Parkway.
"There was no way I could run or anything," Bales told 6News' Jack Rinehart. "One of them grabbed my jacket and started pulling on it and I started kicking and another one grabbed my leg."
Thomas Wimberly was walking along the alley when he said he saw the woman being attacked and tried to help her.
"I don't know where the strength came from," he said. "It was being scared, it was anger and when they started biting me I was mad for that too, so I had to protect myself."
Both Bales and Wimberly suffered severe bites. Bales was released from a hospital earlier this week, while Wimberly remains at Wishard Memorial Hospital. Wimberly said he still hasn't escaped the pit bulls, even when he sleeps. "I've had nightmares, it's hard to sleep," he said from his hospital bed. "I wake up at 2 in the morning thinking someone's on me. I wake up sweating and I thought I'd probably need therapy for that."
"Of all the bites I've seen this year, in 2008, this is probably one of the worst that I've seen," said Lt. Jerry Bippus. "There were very severe injuries to both arms and legs to both of the victims." Animal Care and Control officers seized all three pit bulls. Officials said this attack was particularly heinous.
The owner of the pit bulls was cited for 12 ordinance violations, each carrying a fine of up to $2,500. The dogs have been quarantined and will be put down next week, city officials said.
