Drinking Big Rig Driver Hits Tower On I-80 In Indiana

Posted on Jun 14, 2010

The Indiana State Patrol found an opened can of beer in the cab of a big rig driver responsible for hitting a camera tower off of Interstate 80 just across the Indiana boarder on Monday morning, June 7. After being asked about the beer, the driver, 52-year-old Jose Herrera admitted to drinking at least three beers before beginning his shift earlier that night.

The Indiana truck accident took place just before two in the morning, when Herrera said another trucker cut him off and forced him to run off of I-80, through a chain-linked fence, and into a 180-foot camera tower owned and operated by the Indiana Department of Transportation. The camera tower, which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, was completely ruined in Indiana big rig accident. The tower also fell across the roadway, the onramp that connects eastbound Interstate 80-94 to southbound Interstate 65.

After admitting to drinking a commercial truck and driving, Herrera was arrested by Indiana State Police and taken to Lake County Jail on an OWI charge and a mischief charge. The other truck that was supposedly involved in the tractor-trailer accident has not been located.

Unfortunately, drinking and driving is not only a problem for car and pickup drivers – irresponsible truck drivers will drink on the road despite laws and regulations, putting others on the road in danger. Because trucks take more skill to drive and cause more damage when they crash, drunk truckers are a huge danger on Indiana roads.
