The Muskegon Chronicle reported that Edwin J. Ackerman was killed on Monday, Sept. 22, when his a 59-year old women was puling out of a Twin Lake bar parking lot.
The motorcyclist was driving a Harley-Davidson on M-120 at around 9 PM in the evening when a Holton-area woman pulled out of the Alibi Bar without seeing the approaching bike. She was a customer inside of the bar prior to the crash.
Lt. Michael Poulin, director of the Muskegon County Sheriff's Department Traffic Services Division reported that Ackerman was airlifted from Mercy Health Partners Hackley Campus to Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, where he later died. His wife added that although he lost vital signs at the site of the crash, they were restored briefly before he died.
Poulin also said that there were no witnesses, it appeared that Ackerman veered to avoid the car, a 1999 Chrysler, but hit the front right headlight on the oncoming car - on the passenger side.
"She said she looked both ways and didn't see anything coming," Poulin said. She was brought to Muskegon County jail for drunk driving that caused serious injury or death. She appeared intoxicated at the scene of the crash.
This was the fifth fatal motorcycle crash in Muskegon County this year.
Donna Ackerman, his wife of 25 years, described her husband as a loving father, husband, and avid motorcycle rider.
"He was the life of the party. He was always active, doing something with friends and family," she said. He was an U.S. Army Veteran who worked as a machine maintenance supervisor at CWC Textron and was on his way home from work at the time of the accident.
