Elkhart teen hurt in Sunday crash

Kaitlin R. Neal, 16, was taken to Memorial Hospital of South Bend with what police called a severe head injury after a car she was riding in was involved in an accident at 8:36 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, 2009, at C.R. 26 west of C.R. 113.

A vehicle driven by Chelsea Spilman, 17, of Elkhart, was westbound on C.R. 26 west of C.R. 113 following another vehicle. When the driver of that vehicle braked, Spilman swerved to the left and collided with an oncoming vehicle driven by Dennis Taylor, 65, of Elkhart. Spilman’s vehicle hit the one it had been following, but that vehicle left the scene, according to police.

Chelsea N. Schwier, 16, of Elkhart, was treated and released at Elkhart General Hospital for possible bruised ribs. Wayne Roberts, 86, of Elkhart, had minor cuts following the accident. Neither Taylor nor Spilman reported being hurt.
