A multiple-car accident on Interstate 65 outside of Indianapolis left three out of four family members in serious, life-threatening condition. The cause of the IN car accident was an elderly man driving a horse trailer who mistook the accelerator for the brake pedal.
Indiana State Police say that 72-year-old Charles Walker of Knox, Indiana, was illegally pulling a horse trailer behind his RV when the traffic on I-65 near Keystone Avenue suddenly came to a stop ahead of him. He pressed the gas instead of the brake, slamming into a minivan in front of him and ramming the vehicle into four other cars. Indiana Police ticketed the man for driving in the far left lane while towing a trailer, driving a vehicle that is too long, and not slowing down when required.
State Police Sgt. Anthony Emery said that the man was also driving with an expired license plate on his trailer, which was carrying three horses.
The minivan was filled with the McCormick family - Erin, 36, Erik, Gwendolyn, 4, and Quintin, 2. Erin, the driver, was rushed to Wishard Hospital in critical condition while her two daughters were rushed to Riley's Hospital for Children with serious head and face trauma. Erik McCormick suffered only minor injuries in the crash.
Jeffery Parson of Indianapolis and Kimberly Kelly of Greenwood, Indiana, were driving two other cars that were hit in the Indianapolis car accident. The accident shut down I-65 southbound lanes south of Indianapolis for over three hours.
