Fatal crash on SR 64 leaves 1 dead

Posted on Apr 30, 2009

Nancy Carpenter, 43, of Evansville has been cited for driving too fast to avoid a collision in connection with a wreck that killed a Mount Carmel, Ill., man Wednesday, April 29, 2009, on State Route 64 near the Indiana-Illinois state line.

Harry Stevenson, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that involved three vehicles.

Carpenter was driving a 2007 Toyota Camry east on State Route 64 when she approached Stevenson’s Chevrolet Cavalier that also was eastbound. Stevenson was slowing down and preparing to make a left turn onto County Road 950 West. Carpenter attempted to pass his vehicle on the right but struck the right rear of the Chevrolet.

The impact pushed it into the westbound lane of the highway into the path of an oncoming 1997 Jeep Wrangler driven by Alex Windes, 22, of Allendale, Ill.

Carpenter was airlifted to St. Mary's Medical Center at Evansville for treatment of minor injuries. Windes was taken to Wabash Valley Hospital at Mount Carmel where he also was treated for minor injuries. All three drivers were wearing seat belts.
