A Northern Indiana man was likely killed by his pet pit bull at his rural home in White County this week. According to the Chicago Tribune and local news sources, 58-year-old Joseph Hines was found dead at his home with an apparent fatal dog bite in his jugular vein and other animal bites on his arms, ankle, and hands.
The man, who lived outside the town of Burnettsville and about 70 miles north of Indianapolis, had owned the dog for four or five years, according to family members. The male pit bull, named Honey, had been rescued by Hines and had no history of violence or aggression. Many neighbors had often seen Hines walking the dog. Hines was not married, did not have children, and was unemployed at the time of his death. One relative called the fatal Indiana dog attack unfathomable and bizarre.
A White County autopsy following the man’s death confirmed that the pit bull caused the man’s death.
The dog was taken to White County Animal Control. Hines’ sister has ordered the dog to be euthanized.
The Indianapolis dog bite attorneys at Keller & Keller LLP are thinking about Hines’ family and loved ones in the wake of this tragic event.
