FDA Warns Zicam Products Could Harm Sense Of Smell

Posted on Jun 28, 2009

On June 16, 2009, the Food & Drug Administration released a statement warning consumers about three different Zicam cold remedy products, citing that the homeopathic products may cause users to lose their sense of smell after multiple uses of the over-the-counter supplement.

The three products, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, Zicam Cold Rememdy Nasal Gel, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids, have all been cited in 130 different reports that the products can harm people's sense of smell. The press release also states that the loss of the sense of smell could make it difficult to detect the smell of dangerous smoke or gas and could lower overall quality of life. A few other reports also include consumers losing their sense of taste after using the product.

The FDA recommended that anyone who has experienced this loss of smell after using Zicam products should contact their doctor and immediately discontinue use of the product. In general, the press release advises that no one use the products because of the possible threat of harm.

People around the country who have experience the loss of smell after using Zicam products have been contacting defective drug injury lawyers across the country for help - and in 2006, a lawsuit ended in a $12 million settlement.

The drug was not reviewed like other cold medications because the drug is homeopathic. That means that many of the marketing rules that other drugs face do not apply - and the $200 million market is not regular as it should be, according to many.
