Four teens involved in fatal crash

Posted on Mar 24, 2009

A crash involving two pickup trucks on Sunday, March 22, 2009, kills one teenager and critically injures three others.  The accident occured at C.R. 36 and the East County Line Road.

Nichole Hostetler, 19, of 29172 C.R. 52, in Nappanee was killed.

Injured were drivers Joseph A. Miller, 18, 12367 C.R. 36, Goshen, and Darin Schlabach, 18, 6555 S. 1100 W., Millersburg. Luaine Miller, 17, 2125 N. 500 W., Shipshewana, a passenger in the Schlabach truck, had abdominal pain and a broken leg. All the crash victims are believed to have suffered internal injuries.

Joseph Miller, who was driving a 1994 Ford Ranger east on C.R. 36, entered the intersection with County Line Road, into the path of a northbound 2002 Chevrolet S-10 truck, driven by Schlabach. Hostetler was a passenger in the Miller truck.

Miller was taken from the scene by Medflight helicopter to South Bend Memorial Hospital, where he is now listed in good condition. Luaine Miller was flown by Samaritan helicopter to Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne for treatment.

All four teens knew each other, Osterday said, although it is unclear whether the two vehicles were traveling together or whether it was a coincidence they crashed.
