Four-car collision caused by distracted driver kills Bay City teacher

Posted on Oct 24, 2008

October 20th 2008--Tuscola County

A four-car collision on M-15, east of Cottrell Road in Tuscola Township, has claimed the life of a 41-year-old Bay City teacher.

Heidi Elaine Derks-Rehmann, 41, of Bay City, died at 7:35 a.m. today, at Spectrum Health Butterworth Campus Hospital in Grand Rapids, as a result of complications from surgery that was performed to repair a badly damaged leg.

Authorities reported that a vehicle traveling west on M-15, driven by 45-year old Lisa Wilmot, of Mayville, crossed the centerline striking three eastbound vehicles.

The first vehicle struck was driven by 20-year old Daniel Reinbold of Reese.  Ms. Wilmot then hit the second vehicle which was driven by Mrs. Derks-Rehmann, and then a third vehicle driven by 21-year old Angeline Zavala, also of Bay City.

Lisa R. Wilmot was driving a Saturn when the accident occurred. The 45-year-old Mayville woman told police she had become distracted while putting something into her purse. Her Saturn struck a Pontiac Grand Prix, then a Lincoln, then a Dodge Intrepid.

The crash trapped Mrs. Derks-Rehman in her Lincoln for more than an hour while Vassar and Millington-Arbela firefighters used cutting tools to free her.

The crash remains under investigation.
